Apologies for the wait on this video, was originally meant to just be a quick sort of "chat" about why I play FPS games but it became a lot more personal very fast. From selling a console to acting as a dam that contains an immense amount of toxicity from spilling over into the general gaming community, FPS games have truly cemented their place as a permanent genre to stay for years to come. Some of the greatest games of all time have been FPS’s, the entire halo franchise, that’s it really. On a more serious note I’ve never hid the fact that I enjoy a good FPS game, but seeing as I’ve enjoyed this genre so much, at times almost too much, I want to understand just why one genre had such an insane stranglehold over not only my childhood, but pretty much my entire gaming career up until this point. The best way I can think of doing that is to essentially just reverse engineer what I would consider the perfect FPS game based on what I enjoy the most out of all the FPS games i’ve played. Now through this video I’m not trying to say that FPS games were the only thing I ever played, I definitely wore the genre out a bit for myself but I still enjoy a multitude of non-FPS games. I’ve played through every single pokemon game to pass some time, I’m always down to jump around a solid platformer, simulate and manage an entire city, shatter precious ecosystems by overhunting apex predators, or re-think nearly every single one of my life choices when I hop onto a fighting game. If you told me I had 10,000 hours in Minecraft I’d probably say, “really, only 10000?”. I played through all of Montaro because it’d give me funny little achievements I could throw on my steam profile, and then I did it again when I learned there was a sequel. What i’m trying to say here is that I’ll try pretty much anything, except genshin impact. When it comes to worldbuilding, I’ve always enjoyed a game that really sells it’s world and lore as something bigger than the game itself. I brought it up alongside Halo 2, so that’s really my example here, and that’s what was always so interesting about Halo 2’s story to me and why I still think it’s the best story in the franchise. The universe expands so much and we learn about so many new interesting characters and details that add so many layers of interest and mystery for me. Back when I played on the xbox 360, whenever I wasn’t wading through the same action set pieces in specific missions of MW3, Black Ops 2, or Halo, I was spending my time reading through Halsey’s journal, or looking up theory videos about whoever this “mendicant bias” guy was, my tastes for FPS games didn’t really evolve until I got on a computer. See, while console FPS was evolving under titles like Goldeneye and Halo, the PC had already been tearing it up for years beforehand with Wolfenstein, Quake, Doom, Unreal Tournament, Half-Life and by extension Counter-Strike. Console FPS games had this issue where they needed to figure out how to translate a mouse and keyboard, which were two entirely separate accessories, into one. Goldeneye laid a really good foundation, but the N64 controller’s lack of a second analog stick is built upon by the Duke’s dual analog layout, and used perfectly for Halo. I bring this up because this leads pretty well into my next two pillars for my perfect FPS game, movement, and a feeling of speed. See, considering PC fps’s didn’t have to worry about controller support until much later, the precision of keyboard and mouse allowed developers to make these games FAST. Now, apologies to the oldheads out there who were out getting m-m-m-m-monsterkills every match in unreal or were absolutely tearing it up on instagib, I was not old enough to be apart of that when I made my transition to the PC, I actually started out with CS:GO as my first PC fps. Those games would be Doom (2016) and Titanfall 2, the sense of speed in these games is just absolutely blistering, Titanfall 2 especially. The moment you actually learn how to bhop in Titanfall 2 it’s over, you go from running through these levels to basically flying through them. Doom’s sense of speed went from kinda quick to FAST when Doom Eternal released, gone is just normally strafing around an enemy and replacing it is dashing circles around a group of demons, and launching off of monkeybars, the grappling hook, I think you get the point.

A deep learning Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) can detect the human behavioral characteristics of a user within a video game. We plan to train an A.I. to understand how humans play video games via a visual machine learning program. Once the program understands how humans play video games based on gameplay footage, we can then feed the it gameplay footage to determine if the player in the footage is receiving assistance from a 3rd party "hack" or "cheat" program. The first goal to acheive is detection of the most prevalent "closet hack" which is humanized aim-assist. We will build a program that can extrapolate mouse movement data from gameplay footage via 3D imaging and optical flow. Once accurate mouse data can be logged from gameplay footage successfully, we can then begin to train the A.I. what human aim looks like in a video game. This will be done by providing data to the program from gameplay that has been verified as human. With enough data, we will have a trained A.I. program that can tell if aim within any given piece of gameplay footage is human or machine assisted. Future iterations of the program will include detection of many more forms of closet hacking. Phase 1 focuses primarily on humanized aim-assist. Upon completion of phase 1, WALDO's main function will be vindication and clarity to many recent "hackusations." What it does is try to optimize your system to give as much performance to the game you're running, and return to normal once the game is closed. It can do quite a bit, including giving more CPU priority to the game, more disk priority, inhibiting the screensaver while the game is running, using the GPU performance modes for AMD and Nvidia, when available, and even using overclocking on NVidia GPUs if it can. Gamemode has been around for a while now, but it's still something that is rarely included by default, and needs to be installed separately. The end result of running a game with Gamemode? You'll get more out of your hardware, and get better performance. The improvements will vary from game to game, but in general, the more a game is taxing for your hardware, the more gamemode will make a difference. Gamemode doesn't come preinstalled on many distros, but it's pretty easy to install anyways. Gamemode is available in the repos for Ubuntu, Debian, Solus, Arch, Gentoo, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Mageia, so you can just install it through your regular package manager, for example a quick "sudo apt install gamemode" on Ubuntu. If Gamemode isn't available on your distro of choice? If you're on an older version of Ubuntu, like 18.04 LTS, there is a PPA, you'll find the command to add it here: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:samoilov-lex/gamemode If that doesn't suit your needs, you can always compile Gamemode from source, you can find the instructions in the github page of the project, I'll leave a link to it in the description. Once you've got gamemode installed, how do you make sure your games are actually using it? Let's see. ## Use Gamemode on Steam On steam, it's super simple. Whether your game is running natively, or through proton, all you have to do is add a little launch option. Just righ click your game's name in your library, select "Properties", and in the window that appears, you'll find a "launch options" line. In there, enter gamemoderun %command% That's it. You can close the little window, and run your game as usual. If you were already using other command lines, you can just add that one at the end, and it will work fine. ## Use Gamemode on lutris If your game isn't on Steam, but you're using Lutris, it's even easier. On Lutris, you get the option to enable gamemode with a single switch, if it's installed. Just right click your game in Lutris's main window, select "Configure", and go to the last tab. Here, you'll find a "Enable Feral Gamemode" option. Turn it on if that's not the case, and you're good to go. You can also auto enable it for all games, just by going to the Lutris settings, in the "System option" tab, and enabling Gamemode there. All games will now make use of it. If you're playing games on another platform, you should have a menu item to run them, in your distribution's menu. You'll have to edit that menu entry using any program of your choice. I use appEdit on elementary OS, but there are others for other distros. In that menu entry, you'll need to add "gamemoderun" before the actual command line that starts the game. For example, if you have something like /usr/share/supertuxcart, just type gamemoderun before all of that. I'd still advise you add these games to Lutris if at all possible, it makes it a lot easier to handle all of that. If you're unsure if gamemode is correctly starting, open a terminal, and type gamemoded -s. It will tell you if gamemode is active or not. And that's about it. Since it's so easy to install and use, there is no real reason not to use it, and get a nice 5 to 10% boost in terms of FPS in all your games.
