Dig into the distinction between a language and a dialect, and uncover the history of standardized languages. Outside of China, Mandarin and Cantonese are often referred to as Chinese dialects, despite being even more dissimilar than Spanish and Italian. On the other hand, speakers of Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, which are three distinct languages, can usually communicate with each other in their native tongues. So, when is speech considered a dialect versus a language? Martin Hilpert investigates. Lesson by Martin Hilpert, directed by Luísa M H Copetti, Hype CG. How language shapes the way we think | Lera Boroditsky

There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. "The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000." How U.S. Military Linguists Learn Languages Fast

22.10.2021

🇺🇸 United States Military Linguists are known for being among the fastest language learners in the world. But speed is certainly not the only goal. From gathering critical intelligence to supporting troops on the frontlines, a lot rests on the language skills of linguists in the U.S. Armed Forces. So how do linguists in the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy learn the language skills they need to do their jobs? That is precisely what I wanted to find out, so I reached out to two graduates of the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey, California: Elle and Jack. This video details the incredibly intense programmes these service members complete, including interesting techniques like “iso-immersion” and “scream & scribble”. While only a select few can attend DLI, there are some powerful principles in this video that ALL language learners can apply. Hooah! 📖 LEARN A LANGUAGE THROUGH THE POWER OF STORY If training at DLI isn't in the cards for you, don't despair! You can start learning 12+ languages right from the comfort of home with my story-based courses. 👉🏼🤍 📺 WATCH NEXT: How Mormon Missionaries Learn Languages Fast 👉🏼 🤍 📚 VIDEOS & RESOURCES MENTIONED: Live Demo! And how did the Celts influence the English language. New research and DNA evidence tells us more than we knew even a few years ago. The answer is that they had a massive influence on English. Today I react to and review the most popular language learning apps and platforms, including Rosetta Stone, Duolingo, Memrise, Babbel, and Pimsleur. I regularly discuss language learning methods on my channel, including strategies for memorizing large amounts of vocabulary through spaced repetition software like Anki and making sure to speak your target language constantly (in person or via websites like Italki), but today we’re going to take a look at some of the most popular commercial, mass-market apps and websites for learning languages. It was an odd experience as I usually don’t use these types of platforms for language learning, but there definitely were some gems among them! (And this video is not sponsored, by the way.) ●Discord: 🤍 ●TikTok: 🤍 ●Buy me a coffee: 🤍 ●YouTube Shorts Channel: 🤍 ●Instagram: 🤍kazulanguages - 🤍 This time, I went on Omegle and spoke 10 languages! Currently, I speak 8 languages, which I studied properly. These are English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Indonesian, Russian, and Hindi. Apart from that, I speak Japanese for sure, which is my mother tongue. Furthermore, I know a tiny bit of Polish, Turkish, Romanian, Farsi, Swahili, Tagalog, Burmese, Thai, and Bengali! Of course, my skills of these languages are still far from sufficient. The thing I value the most, however, is the attitude to trying to know their culture. Interacting with people from different background is an eye-opening experience and that makes me really happy. I wanna inspire people to learn different languages.
