Load Balancing is a key concept to system design. One simple way would be hashing all requests and then sending them to the assigned server. The standard way to hash objects is to map them to a search space, and then transfer the load to the mapped computer. A system using this policy is likely to suffer when new nodes are added or removed from it. Some terms you would here in system design interviews are Fault Tolerance, in which case a machine crashes. And Scalability, in which case machines need to be added to process more requests. Another term used often is request allocation. This means assigning a request to a server. Sites that become extremely popular have to deal with consistent increases in monthly traffic, which can slow down the experience for everyone involved. A well designed load balancer will efficiently distribute incoming network traffic across a group of backend servers. A load balancer acts as the “traffic cop” sitting in front of your servers and routing client requests across all servers capable of fulfilling those requests in a manner that maximizes speed and capacity utilization and ensures that no one server is overworked, which could degrade performance. If a single server goes down, the load balancer redirects traffic to the remaining online servers. When a new server is added to the server group, the load balancer automatically starts to send requests to it. Load balancing is everywhere, most often starts at the DNS level and can choose any server selection strategy based on the system design. Você já parou pra pensar como grandes empresas conseguem lidar com milhares ou milhões de usuários no seu site ou aplicativo sem perder conexão ou ter problemas de performance? Para entendermos como funciona um Load Balancer precisamos saber o que é de fato um Load Balancer. Um Load Balancer é um método de distribuição do tráfego de rede entre vários computadores! Ele fica na frente de dos servidores onde executam sua aplicação. E enquanto seu backend consome as requisições o Load Balancer vai distribuindo essa enxurrada de requisições para seus N servidores para que eles não sobrecarreguem. Se houver um problema com uma de suas máquinas, o Load Balancer vai bolar uma forma magica de redirecionar as requisições para as demais máquinas disponíveis. OK, mas como que ele faz essa distribuição? Bom, aí que entra mágica! Existem algoritmos responsáveis por fazer essa distribuição. Os mais conhecidos são Round Robin, Menor número de conexões, Menor tempo de resposta, IP Hash e Duas escolhas aleatórias. Round Robin: ele envia as requisições para cada servidor sequencialmente distribuindo por igual. Menor número de conexões: ele verifica qual dos servidores possui o menor número de conexões e direciona para a máquina. Menor tempo de resposta: quando ele enviar uma requisição para medir o tempo de resposta e verificando quantas requisições esse servidor tem. IP Hash: redireciona para o servidor baseado no IP do cliente. Duas escolhas aleatórias: seleciona dois servidores aleatoriamente e envia para o servidor que possuir menos conexões. O que eu ganho usando um Load Balancer? Usando um Load Balancer você é capaz de reduzir o tempo de resposta da sua aplicação para o cliente. Facilita sua aplicação de escalar quando for preciso, até porque quando você precisar de mais máquinas basta adicioná-las nas configurações do seu LB e pronto. Pode deixar sua aplicação mais resiliente com um sistema de redundância. Se por algum motivo seu servidor parar de responder o LB enviar as chamadas para outro servidor.
